The problem (1) FOOD WASTE – Global statistics • In 2022 , about 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted globally (including household, retail & food service sectors). • That amounts to around 79 kg per person per year . • Households are the largest contributor, accounting for roughly 60% of this waste; food services about 28% , and retail about 12% . • There is also significant food loss earlier in the chain (harvest, storage, transport, etc.). For example, ~13% of food is lost between harvest and retail globally. • Waste in human effort, energy, other resources (water, fuels, etc) • Food loss & waste combined contribute approx. 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions Incorporating bioactive ingredients into active food packaging through sustainable processes to reduce food and packaging material waste (ΥΠ3ΤΑ-0559800) “Re- ActPack ”
