Regulations / Legislation Europe • EFSA - Regulation (EC) No 258/97 • The safety of UV-treated milk as a novel food is confirmed following an assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products 2016), -> safe for consumption under specific conditions. • The approved treatment involves using a UV-C dose of 1045 J/ L applied after pasteurization of both full-fat and semi-skimmed cow’s milk, which helps extend the milk’s shelf life from 12 to 21 days and enhance its vitamin D3 content. USA • FDA - 179.39 Ultraviolet radiation for the processing and treatment of food (not dairy) • FDA – 2025 confirms that the UV-C method meets the official efficacy criteria for pasteurization and could be used in the production of powdered dairy ingredients ( whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, immune-supporting compounds i.e. lactoferrin).
