Estimating the burden of FBDs th th • Europe (EFSA/ECDC, 2023): Campylobacter spp. : leading cause of foodborne infections. Salmonella spp., STEC : increasing trends (record year). Listeria monocytogenes : fewer cases but high case-fatality. • Global (WHO, 2022): ~ 600 million illnesses /year from unsafe food. ~ 420,000 deaths /year (~30% in children). “ The burden of FBDs remains high — this is a current, not theoretical, issue”. Recent example (CDC, 2025): • US listeriosis outbreak linked to sliced deli meats: 61 cases, 60 hospitalizations, 10 deaths, 19 states.
