The problem (2) FOOD WASTE Re duction of plastics Re CYCLE Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) – Regulation (EU) 2025/40 • Prevent and reduce packaging waste . • Improve recyclability : all packaging on the EU market must be recyclable in an economically viable way by 2030. • Increase use of recycled plastic content ; reduce virgin material usage. • Design rules: minimise unnecessary packaging, avoid empty space, reduce weight/volume. Specific bans and restrictions: • By 2030, single-use plastic packaging for certain fresh fruits & vegetables in quantities < 1.5 kg is forbidden • Restrictions on certain single-use plastic items (e.g. portions of condiments, sauces, sugar in food service) and packaging formats. • Limits on substances of concern, e.g. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in food packaging.
